روغن اسانس از گیاهان دارویی و معطر گرفته می شود. این محصول، طبیعی، غلیظ، معطر و آبگریز است که به روش تقطیر بخار یا به واسطه حلال ها از گیاه استخراج می شود. روغن اسانس حاوی چند ترکیب شیمیایی است که نشان دهنده خواص و فعالیت های مختلف بیولوژیکی می باشد.
نعنا از جمله ی گیاهان دارویی معروف و معطر است که با توجه به خواص آنتی اکسیدانی و ضد میکروبی آن، در طب سنتی و طبِ رایجِ میان اقوام مختلف دنیا استفاده می شود. نعنا حاوی عناصر فرّار، فلاونوئید، اسیدهای آلی و کینون به ویژه برای دستگاه گوارش، سیستم عصبی مرکزی و سیستم تنفسی می باشد. به طور کلی از نعنا به عنوان ماده ضد میکروبی، ضد التهابی و یا بی حس کننده استفاده می شد.
اسانس نعنا و منتول، مواد و ترکیبات مهمی در لوازم آرایشی از جمله شامپو و عطر، فرآورده های دارویی و آروماتراپی محسوب می شوند. عصاره و روغن اسانسِ گونه های مختلف نعنا، اثر سایتوتوکسیک (سمّی) ملایمی بر رده های سلول های سرطانی در غربالگری نشان داده است.
به علاوه، اسانس نعنا به عنوان طعم دهنده در بسیاری از محصولات خانگی و خوراکی استفاده می شود. مثلاً از آن به عنوان خوشبو کننده دهان، طعم دادن به نوشیدنی ها، در دهان شویه به عنوان ضدعفونی کننده، در خمیردندان، آدامس، دسر، آب نبات و شکلات نعنا استفاده می شود.
